Apply Now

We are seeking an exceptional 1:1 Teaching Assistant with Braille proficiency (we can offer training) to join our supportive team in Blackpool. This is a crucial 1-year fixed-term contract role, providing tailored support to an individual visually impaired student, enabling them to fully access the curriculum and participate in all aspects of school life.

This is a fantastic opportunity to make a profound difference to a young person's learning journey and independence. We are looking for someone who is patient, proactive, and committed to fostering an inclusive and enriching educational environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Braille Transcription & Support: Provide expert 1:1 Braille transcription and support for a visually impaired student across various subjects and activities.

  • Material Adaptation: Produce and adapt learning materials into appropriate Braille formats (e.g., literary Braille, Nemeth for Maths, Music Braille if applicable), ensuring accessibility.

  • Skill Development: Support the student in developing their Braille reading, writing, and tactile skills, promoting independence.

  • Assistive Technology: Assist the student with the effective use of specialist assistive technology (e.g., Braille notetakers, screen readers, magnifiers).

  • Curriculum Access: Facilitate the student's independent learning and full participation in classroom activities, working closely with the class teacher and Qualified Teacher of Visually Impaired (QTVI).

  • Personalised Support: Provide individualised support tailored to the student's specific learning needs, adapting teaching strategies and resources as required.

  • Record Keeping: Maintain accurate records of the student's progress and support provided, contributing to reviews and reports.

  • Environmental Adaptations: Assist in modifying the learning environment to ensure it is safe and accessible for the student.

  • Social & Emotional Development: Support the student's social integration, confidence building, and development of self-help skills.

  • Safeguarding: Uphold the school's robust safeguarding policies and promote the well-being of all students.

Who We Are Looking For:

We are seeking a compassionate, resilient, and highly skilled individual who is dedicated to making a positive impact on a child's education.

Essential Skills & Experience:

  • Braille Proficiency: Proven proficiency in Braille to Level 2 certification (e.g., UKAAF Braille Competency Certificate / RNIB Certificate in Contracted Braille).

  • SEN Experience: Significant experience working with children or young people with Special Educational Needs (SEN), particularly visual impairment, preferably within a school setting.

  • Communication: Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organisational skills, with the ability to build strong rapport.

  • Understanding of VI: A strong understanding of the needs of visually impaired students and strategies to support their learning and independence.

  • Patience & Empathy: A patient, empathetic, and nurturing approach, with a genuine passion for supporting student development.

  • Teamwork & Initiative: Ability to work effectively as part of a team (including teachers, specialists, and parents) and independently.

  • Adaptability: A proactive approach to problem-solving and adapting to individual student needs and the changing demands of the classroom.

  • IT Skills: Competence in using standard IT software, and ideally familiarity with assistive technologies.

  • Safeguarding: A strong understanding of confidentiality and safeguarding in a school environment (an Enhanced DBS check will be required upon appointment).

Desirable (but not essential):

  • Relevant Teaching Assistant qualification (e.g., Level 2 or 3 Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools).

  • Experience with specific Braille software or equipment (e.g., Duxbury, Perkins Brailler, Mountbatten Brailler).

  • Knowledge of Nemeth Code (Braille for Mathematics) or Music Braille.

Why Join Our Team in Blackpool?

  • Be a vital part of a supportive, inclusive, and forward-thinking school community.

  • Make a tangible and meaningful difference in the life and education of a visually impaired student.

  • Work alongside experienced professionals including a QTVI and class teachers.

  • Enjoy the stability of a 1-year fixed-term contract with potential for extension.

Application Process:

If you are a highly skilled and compassionate 1:1 Teaching Assistant with Braille expertise looking for a rewarding fixed-term contract in Blackpool, we encourage you to apply today!
