Job Type: Full-Time
Start date: September 2026

Food Technology Teacher - SEMH School

An excellent opportunity has arisen for a passionate and resilient Food Technology Teacher to join a specialist secondary setting supporting students with Social, Emotional and Mental Health needs. This is a rewarding role for a teacher who is committed to making a positive impact on the lives of young people who require additional support to achieve their potential.

The school provides a nurturing, trauma-informed environment with small class sizes, a strong pastoral ethos, and a focus on building positive relationships that enable students to re-engage with education.

The Role

As a Food Technology Teacher, you will deliver engaging and practical lessons to students across Key Stages 3 and 4, adapting learning to meet a wide range of individual needs. You will encourage students to develop valuable life skills, confidence, independence, and healthy lifestyle choices through creative and inclusive teaching.

Working closely with pastoral staff, therapists and the wider multidisciplinary team, you will help remove barriers to learning while promoting positive behaviour, emotional wellbeing and academic progress.

Key Responsibilities

  • Plan and deliver engaging Food Technology lessons that meet the needs of students with SEMH and additional learning needs.
  • Differentiate learning to support students with varying abilities, EHCPs and SEND needs.
  • Create a safe, inclusive and nurturing learning environment where students feel valued and supported.
  • Teach practical cooking skills, food preparation, nutrition, food safety and healthy eating.
  • Promote independence, confidence, resilience and life skills through practical learning.
  • Build positive, consistent relationships with students using restorative and trauma-informed approaches.
  • Implement effective behaviour management strategies that support emotional regulation and engagement.
  • Assess, monitor and record student progress, providing regular feedback and adapting teaching accordingly.
  • Maintain high standards of health and safety within the food technology classroom and kitchen.
  • Work collaboratively with teaching assistants, pastoral teams, SEND staff and external professionals.
  • Contribute to EHCP reviews, progress meetings and individual support plans where required.
  • Support students in preparing for accredited qualifications where appropriate.
  • Promote safeguarding and student wellbeing at all times in line with statutory guidance.

The Ideal Candidate Will Have

  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS/QTLS) or relevant teaching qualification.
  • Experience teaching Food Technology at secondary level.
  • Experience working within SEMH, SEND, PRU, Alternative Provision or specialist education is highly desirable.
  • Strong classroom and behaviour management skills.
  • A patient, resilient and compassionate approach to supporting vulnerable young people.
  • Excellent communication and relationship-building skills.
  • A commitment to inclusive, trauma-informed practice.
  • Knowledge of safeguarding procedures and child protection responsibilities.

Why Apply?

  • Small class sizes allowing for personalised teaching.
  • A supportive leadership team committed to staff wellbeing and professional development.
  • Opportunity to make a genuine difference in the lives of vulnerable young people.
  • Collaborative and multidisciplinary working environment.
  • Excellent facilities and resources.
  • Long-term opportunity with potential for a permanent position.

If you are an enthusiastic Food Technology Teacher looking to make a lasting impact within a supportive SEMH setting, we would love to hear from you.

Timeplan Education are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare and safety of children and young people and expect all staff to show this commitment. The successful candidate will be required to complete Disclosure and Barring Service declarations in line with Section 115 of the Police Act 1997. You will also be required to provide 2 professional references covering at least the last 2 years, and complete our online application followed by a video or face to face interview.
