Overview

This is a hands-on, varied Electrical Technician role supporting a wide range of engineering, laboratory, and infrastructure activities within an innovative fusion technology environment.

You'll work across multiple engineering projects rather than a single production line, contributing to control systems, power distribution, fault finding, installations, and commissioning. Install and maintain cable containment systems such as tray, conduit, and trunking.

Install and support data networks, associated cabling, and equipment.

Perform testing and commissioning of electrical equipment and infrastructure.

Respond to electrical breakdowns and emergency repairs.

Collaborate with engineers, technicians, and contractors on larger engineering projects.

Maintain safe working practices, identify risks, and ensure tools and materials are available when required.

What Makes This Role Different

Highly varied work in a research and engineering environment rather than a production line.

Exposure to both control systems and mains electrical infrastructure.

Practical, hands-on role across laboratories, workshops, and technical facilities.

Opportunity to work on bespoke electrical systems rather than standard installations.

Daily involvement in projects requiring problem-solving and adaptability.

Contribute to the development of advanced fusion technologies.

Essential Experience & Skills

Electrical apprenticeship or equivalent practical training and experience.

Experience working safely with low-voltage (LV) electrical systems.

Ability to test, fault-find, and maintain electrical systems.

Experience with control systems, control panels, or similar electrical assemblies.

Ability to read and interpret electrical drawings and schematics.

Good understanding of electrical health and safety practices.

Comfortable working in a practical, hands-on engineering environment.

Self-motivated, proactive, and able to work with minimal supervision.

Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.

Good communication skills and the ability to work effectively as part of a team.

Desirable

18th Edition (BS 7671).

Inspection and Testing qualification (2391).

Experience working in engineering, R&D, or other complex technical environments.

Additional certifications such as MEWP, PASMA, PAT, or similar.
