Our client is a friendly and welcoming primary school in Taunton seeking a dedicated School Caretaker to join their team and play a vital role in maintaining a safe, secure and well-presented learning environment for pupils, staff and visitors.
The role is 30 hours per week, Monday to Friday, working on an annualised hours contract. This means there may be periods during the year where additional hours are required, particularly during school holidays or busy maintenance periods, while you will continue to receive the same monthly salary throughout the year.
As the School Caretaker, you will be responsible for the day-to-day management and upkeep of the school site, ensuring the buildings and grounds are safe, clean and well maintained. Duties will include carrying out routine maintenance and minor repairs, undertaking regular health and safety checks, liaising with contractors when required, and ensuring compliance with relevant site procedures. The role may also involve opening and locking the school, responding to alarm call-outs where necessary, and supporting school events outside of normal working hours.
Flexibility is important, as you may occasionally be required to provide additional cover or support during busy periods. Access to your own vehicle is desirable.
The ideal candidate will have:
Previous experience as a school caretaker, site supervisor, facilities assistant, maintenance operative or in a similar hands-on maintenance role.
Good practical DIY skills, including basic building maintenance, minor plumbing, decorating, carpentry and general repairs. Basic electrical knowledge would be advantageous.
Experience maintaining school buildings and grounds, including litter picking, minor gardening and ensuring outdoor areas remain safe and presentable.
A good understanding of health and safety legislation, including carrying out routine site inspections and risk assessments.
The ability to prioritise workloads, work independently and use initiative to resolve maintenance issues efficiently.
Excellent communication skills and the ability to build positive relationships with staff, contractors and visitors.
A reliable, proactive and flexible approach, with pride in maintaining a safe and welcoming school environment.
An understanding of safeguarding responsibilities within a school setting.
This is an excellent opportunity to become a valued member of a supportive primary school community, helping to create a safe, welcoming and well-maintained environment where children can thrive.
