Project / Mechanical Engineer

Location: Redditch (Hybrid - 3-4 days on site)
Rate: Up to 31 per hour (depending on experience) - Inside IR35
Hours: Monday to Thursday: 8:00am - 5:00pm (45-minute lunch) Friday: 8:00am - 12:00pm
Security Clearance: Must hold, or be eligible to obtain, SC Clearance

Project / Mechanical Engineer Opportunity

We are seeking an experienced Project / Mechanical Engineer to support a key engineering programme involving the life extension of a legacy defence product. This is an exciting opportunity to work on a technically challenging project focused on removing obsolescence, updating engineering documentation, and supporting the repair and overhaul of a high-pressure inert gas supply system.

The successful candidate will combine strong mechanical engineering knowledge with project management skills, acting as the main customer contact while overseeing technical delivery throughout the project lifecycle.

Key Responsibilities

• Carry out strip and survey investigations, documenting and photographing existing assemblies and test activities.
• Produce assembly and test procedures.
• Develop maintenance documentation, including repair and overhaul procedures and spare parts planning.
• Identify and manage component obsolescence, updating engineering documentation and providing technical justifications.
• Review materials, processes, standard mechanical parts, seals, and consumables.
• Assess the impact of obsolescence on product compliance and identify any qualification or verification testing required.
• Update FMECA documentation and other customer deliverables.
• Manage project plans, monitor progress, and provide regular customer updates.
• Act as the primary customer point of contact throughout the project.
• Prepare cost estimates and proposals for future phases of work.

Skills & Experience

• Proven experience in mechanical engineering and project engineering roles.
• Strong understanding of mechanical systems, engineering documentation, and configuration control.
• Experience producing technical documentation, maintenance procedures, and engineering reports.
• Knowledge of product compliance, obsolescence management, and engineering change processes.
• Experience working with high-pressure mechanical systems or within the defence or aerospace sectors is advantageous.
• Strong communication and stakeholder management skills.
• Ability to manage multiple priorities while delivering projects to schedule.

Security Requirements

• Current SC Clearance is preferred.
• Candidates must be eligible and willing to obtain SC Clearance if not already cleared.
