Job Purpose

To provide a high-quality, statutory social work service within the Family Help model, working collaboratively with children, young people, and their families to safeguard and promote welfare, reduce risk, and achieve sustainable outcomes.

The postholder will hold a caseload of children and families requiring targeted early help, statutory assessment, or Child in Need (CIN) planning, ensuring interventions are timely, strengths-based, and trauma-informed, aligned to the Family Help approach.

    • Step-up cases requiring safeguarding oversight
  • Complete high-quality statutory assessments, including:
    • Children & Families Assessments
    • Risk assessments and safety plans
  • Take appropriate action where there are safeguarding concerns, including escalation in line with Working Together to Safeguard Children.
  • Ensure all interventions prioritise the child's safety, welfare, and development.

2. Direct Work with Children and Families

  • Build purposeful, professional relationships with children and families using a strengths-based and relationship-focused approach.
  • Undertake direct work to:
    • Capture the voice of the child
    • Assess parenting capacity and family functioning
    • Support behavioural and emotional change
  • Work persistently with families where there is resistance, maintaining a clear focus on safety and outcomes.

3. Planning, Intervention and Review

  • Develop and review Child in Need plans in partnership with families and multi-agency professionals.
  • Chair and/or contribute to:
    • Child in Need meetings
    • Team Around the Family (TAF) meetings
    • Core groups (if stepping up)
  • Monitor progress and adapt plans to ensure measurable impact and improved outcomes.

4. Multi-Agency Working

  • Work collaboratively with partner agencies including schools, health, police, and voluntary sector organisations.
  • Coordinate joined-up interventions to reduce risk and avoid escalation where appropriate.
  • Contribute to multi-agency safeguarding processes and strategy discussions where required.

5. Recording and Compliance

  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date case records in line with statutory requirements and local policy.
  • Prepare high-quality reports for:
    • Reviews and planning meetings
    • Legal processes (where applicable)
  • Work within statutory timescales and service KPIs, ensuring audit-ready recording at all times.
